Gun Control: Why, yes, the NY Times editorial board is still beating the anti-gun drum, in an attempt to make sure a good tragedy does not go to waste.

After discussing Rep Peter King's silly notion of not allowing guns within 1,000 feet of politicians, something which criminals and wacko's would surely ignore, because they are criminals and wacko's, we are treated toRepresentative James Clyburn, a Democrat of South Carolina, said that lawmakers should no longer be treated like everyone else at airport secur...

Orange Julius Doesn't Disappoint
As expected, House Speaker Boehner won't even allow any Gun Control Legislation up for a vote, including Republican Peter King's bill. Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) is rejecting gun-control Legislation offered by the chairman of the Homeland Security Committee in response to the weekend shootings of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) and 19 others in Arizona. Rep. Pete King (R-N.Y.) announced plans Tuesday to introduce Legislation prohibiting people from carrying guns within 1,000 feet of members...
NY Times: More Gun Control! John Boehner: No
NY Times: More Gun Control! John Boehner: “No” Why, yes, the NY Times editorial board is still beating the anti-gun drum, in an attempt to make sure a good tragedy does not go to waste. Ackeman proposes gun-control bill to close 'firesale loophole'
Rep. Gary Ackerman is the third New Yorker to propose gun-control Legislation in the wake of the Mass Shooting in Arizona.
Ackerman said his bill would close the “fire sale Loophole,” which allows gun dealers with revoked licenses to legally sell weapons as their personal collections. They don't need to run an FBI Background Check on the buyer, which would be mandatory at a regular firearm Dealership.
Ackerman is one of a handful of members of Congress talking about Gun Control, ...
NY GOP Congressman joins Lautenberg in fight for gun control
In the wake of Saturday's senseless shooting of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ8) and several others, which claimed the lives of six innocent individuals; conversation has heightened in various areas. Political vitriol has certainly be at the forefront with liberals and Conservatives slinging mud at each other in nothing more than finger pointing. Elected officials have weighed in and most have tried to watch what they say in order to pay proper respect during this time of mourning. Both ...
Arizona Shootings Unlikely to Change Gun Culture
Now is the time for mourning the Victims of Saturday’s mass shooting in Tucson, Arizona, but it’s not the time for new gun-control laws aimed at preventing such tragedies in the future. That’s the political consensus in the wake of the attack on Representative Gabrielle Giffords at a “Congress on Your Corner” event at a Safeway Supermarket. A deranged gunman killed six of Giffords’ constituents, including a Federal Judge and a 9-year-old girl, with a Glock 19 ...
Karl Frisch: Arizona Aftermath: Real Second Amendment Remedies
Growing up, my father -- now retired from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department after 35 years of service -- frequently took me shooting and to just about every gun show within a 100-mile radius of our Southern California home.
In fact, as I write this, several of the guns from his collection are on display at the National Firearms Museum in Fairfax, Virginia.
I may be a progressive but I have absolutely no problem with private Gun Ownership.
If we are to learn anything from the horrible...
GOP leaders quash Republicans effort to ban guns within 1,000 feet of lawmakers
Stumble This! The top two Republicans in the House of Representatives rejected Gun Control Legislation soon after it was announced by a senior GOP congressman, effectively dooming its hopes for consideration. The bill, unveiled by Rep. Peter King (R-NY) on Tuesday, would have banned people from carrying guns within 1,000 feet of elected officials in Congress. It had the support of New York City mayor and outspoken gun-control advocate Michael Bloomberg. His announcement came days after the trag...
Democrat describes uphill battle for gun bill
I just spoke with Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, D-N.Y., about where things stand on the Hill on her proposed ban on high-capacity magazines. The takeaway: It's going to be a tough battle to get any sort of new gun Legislation through Congress.
"The NRA is out there already saying it's a slippery slope -- that if we take away the large magazines we're actually going to try and take away their guns, forgetting to mention that the Supreme Court has already said that everyone has a right to own a...
Afternoon Fix: John Boehner endorses Maria Cino for RNC chair; Bob Menendez could face tough 2012 race
House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) endorses former Bush Administration official Maria Cino for RNC chair; Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour (R) holds a meet-and-greet with South Carolina State Legislators; and polling shows Sen. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) could face a tough re-election bid. * House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) has officially endorsed former Bush Administration official Maria Cino for Republican National Committee Chairman. In a letter to all 168 RNC members, Boehner wrote that Cino is...
Heal This
Speaker John Boehner will host a cocktail party for the Republican National Committee at the same time that President Barack Obama will be addressing the nation at the memorial service for Victims of the Tucson shooting. - Roll Call I honestly don’t know what to say, when in a moment of national mourning the Speaker of the House chooses a Washington, D.C. Fundraiser instead of attending the memorial in Tuscon, Arizona. After a pitch perfect address to the House, the quieting of the c...
Through the congressional looking glass
THROUGH THE CONGRESSIONAL LOOKING GLASS.... I can appreciate why members of Congress have taken a renewed interest in their personal safety this week, but some of the proposals seem off-track.
House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Peter King (R-N.Y.), for example, has talked up a bill that would make it a crime to bring a gun within 1,000 feet of a government official. This idea probably won't go far.
Others are getting even more creative.
An aide to Rep. Dan Burton (R-Ind.) tells CBS New...
Protecting lawmakers: Arm them? Install shields?
(01-11) 16:18 PST WASHINGTON, (AP) --
Several lawmakers defiantly vowed Tuesday to arm themselves after the shooting rampage in Arizona despite the Senate's top Law Enforcement officer's admonition that more guns would not be the answer. "It's not that I'm going to be like Wyatt Earp," declared Rep. Steve Cohen, D-Tenn., who said he was re-applying for a state permit to carry a Concealed Weapon even if he didn't necessarily plan to carry the pistol to public events.
In a Capitol already ringed...
Officers Stopped Suspect on Day of Arizona Shooting
Wednesday, January 12, 2011
By Amanda Lee Myers, Justin Pritchard, Associated Press
Tucson, Ariz. (AP) - In the hours before the Assassination attempt against Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, Jared Loughner went to Walmart, was pulled over for running a red light and ran from his father after an angry confrontation.
Investigators are piecing together the timeline of Loughner's frenzied morning before the attack that killed six.
"What he did and the morning before the shooting, we're just trying to ...
Officers stopped suspect on day of shooting...
TUCSON, Ariz. – A wildlife officer pulled over the suspect in the Assassination attempt against an Arizona congresswoman less than three hours before the deadly attack, authorities said Wednesday as they pieced together more details of a frenzied morning. Jared Lougher ran a red light but was let off with a warning at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, the Arizona Game and Fish Department said. The officer took Loughner's driver's license and vehicle registration information but found no outstanding warr...
Louie Gohmert hits the trifecta: violent rhetoric, conspiracy theories, and guns
While it would be impossible to top the self-centered offensiveness of today's Sarah Palin video -- where she used the attempted Assassination of Gabrielle Giffords to peddle her message of victimhood -- Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) gave it his best shot, but could only manage a trifecta of stupidity.
First, his thoughts on the public comments by Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik on today's political climate:
I hope the sheriff tones his Rhetoric down.
Well, sure. Sheriff Dupnik needs to tone d...
Speaker Boehner: Read My Lips - No New Gun Laws
Rep. Peter King's attempt to create a 1,000 foot radius gun free zone around government officials will not get the support of the new Speaker:
Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) is rejecting gun-control Legislation offered by the chairman of the Homeland Security Committee in response to the weekend shootings of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) and 19 others in Arizona.
Rep. Pete King (R-N.Y.) announced plans Tuesday to introduce Legislation prohibiting people from carrying guns within 1,000 feet ...
At Arizona memorial, Obama urges a discussion that 'heals'
TUCSON, Ariz. — President Barack Obama played the part of "healer in chief" Wednesday night, honoring the Victims of Saturday's Mass Shooting while seeking to calm an increasingly angry political debate, urging all Americans to stop pointing fingers and "make sure that we are talking with each other in a way that heals, not a way that wounds.''
"I have come here tonight as an American who, like all Americans, kneels to pray with you today, and will stand b...
Pete King: We Need to Stop the Fear
Rep. Pete King thinks cops need the power to stop people carrying guns within 1,000 feet of federal officials because Americans are becoming afraid of listening to lawmakers in public. The powerful Long Island Republican who chairs the Homeland Security Committee thinks the Arizona shootings that killed six and left Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) with a bullet hole in her head have deeply chilled regular Americans. "I’ve gotten people saying, 'Hey, you’re a good guy -- do...
President Obama's speech in full
President Obama has paid tribute to the Victims of Saturday's shooting in Arizona. Speaking at a memorial in Tucson, Mr Obama also said that Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, who was shot in the attack, had opened her eyes for the first time since the incident. Six people were killed and several wounded when a gunman opened fire outside a shopping centre in Tucson. Play Will this ship revolutionise the skies? Watch Can Obama make sense of shooting? Listen Why does Gun Control split...
For Once, Washington Gets it Right
Anyone walking around Capitol Hill this week would have been struck by the stillness and quiet -- and especially by how vividly this contrasted with the acrimony swirling online, on Cable News, and on Talk Radio over who should bear the blame for last weekend's massacre in Tucson that gravely wounded Representative Gabrielle Giffords and killed six others. Critics like to claim that Washington is the catalyst for this sort of rage. But right now, they'd be hard-pressed to turn up much evidence....
POLITICAL HOT TOPICS: Thursday, January 13, 2011
In between consoling those touched by Saturday's Arizona shooting and warning the nation against politicizing the tragedy, President Barack Obama delivered some good news in his address at a Tucson memorial event on Wednesday. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona has opened her eyes for the first time since being shot four days ago. "There is nothing I can say that will fill the sudden hole torn in your hearts," Obama said. "But know this: The hopes of a nation are here tonight." Congress has resp...
Dingell Wants Probe Into Gun Control Law
Rep. John Dingell, dean of the House, wants to investigate whether Gun Control laws targeting mentally unstable individuals are working in the wake of the Tucson shootings. “If what we understand is so that we have here is somebody who is mentally disturbed is having an easy time to get a gun and whose warnings of his behavior are not finding its way into the National Instant Check System, we’re having perhaps a serious problem that perhaps needs to be addressed,” the Michigan ...
Sarah Palin Fires Back; New Yorkers Also Scramble for Guns
Apparently fearing an invasion by crazed Arizonans packing heat, New Yorkers are scrambling to buy guns, the Post reports this morning.
At least we're back to reality, instead of the platitudes from President Barack Obama about how we need more "civility." He packed little heat in his Speech last night, "carefully inject[ing]" himself into the standoff between Sarah Palin and humanism.
There's even less chance of civility breaking out than there is of Gun Laws across the entire country bei...
After the Arizona shooting: coming together for gun control (The Christian Science Monitor)
As President Obama and other leaders try to pull the nation together in the aftermath of the Arizona shooting, Americans can also try to draw closer on a highly divisive issue related to the rampage: lack of Gun Controls in the United States.
Debate on this topic has long been polarized. And after every recent massacre by someone who should not have had a gun, little changes in the nation’s Gun Laws.
The gun lobby paints those who support reasonable gun restrictions as simply “antigun,”
Gun control? Civility? My Predictions
Nothing will happen.
I anticipate we will see reduced restrictions on Gun Control actually, as the NRA and its allies push back against the Tucson tragedy. That means no laws requiring gun registration, closing private sale and gun show Loopholes, reinstating the ban on extended clips, eliminating open carry laws, better Background Checks, etc. That's just not the way gun proponents roll, regardless of the tragedy. After all Columbine had no effect, nor did the Virginia Tech shooter. Why shoul...
