Larry David: The liberal television icon took to the editorial pages of the New York Times on Tuesday to declare -- sarcastically -- that his life was finally getting better now that the Obama administration has extended Bush-era Tax Cuts for two years. "There is a God! It passed! The Bush Tax Cuts have been extended two years for the upper bracketeers, of which I am a proud member, thank you very much ...

Larry David: A Sarcastic "Thanks" for the Tax Cut
Larry David has an op-ed in the New York Times today expressing gratitude for the just passed Tax Cut Compromise --- which will extend the breaks for upper income earners like him. He writes, "To begin with, I was planning a trip to Cabo with my kids for Christmas Vacation. We were going to fly coach, but now with the money I’m saving in taxes, I’m going to splurge and bump myself up to first class. First class! Somebody told me they serve warm nuts up there, and call you “...
Curb Your Enthusiasm
You're welcome, Larry David:
THERE is a God! It passed! The Bush Tax Cuts have been extended two years for the upper bracketeers, of which I am a proud member, thank you very much. I’m the last person in the world I’d want to be beside, but I am beside myself! This is a life changer, I tell you. A life changer!
To begin with, I was planning a trip to Cabo with my kids for Christmas Vacation. We were going to fly coach, but now with the money I’m saving in taxes, I’m goin...
How to curb Larry David's enthusiasm for high taxes
Larry David, Seinfeld co-creator and Curb Your Enthusiasm star, has an op-ed today in the New York Times. I hope you like sarcasm: THERE is a God! It passed! Larry David Takes to The Times to Thank Dems For Tax Cuts
Because of Seinfeld's ultra-lucrative syndication, it's safely assumed that creator Larry David resides in the highest income bracket. And once that's established, there's nothing stopping him from admitting that, yes, he is benefiting greatly from the Tax Cuts that his liberal political affiliation requires him to despise.
Just how greatly, you ask? Conveniently, the Curb Your Enthusiasm star/subject was granted an op-ed in The New York Times where he riffed for a few hundred words on how gre...
Larry David Takes On The Tax Cut Deal In Satirical NYT Column
Waiting in line at a Chinese Restaurant, giving money to too-old trick or treaters, and breaking up with a friend. These are just some of the annoyances of modern day life that have been skewered by the writing of Larry David , he of Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm fame. Well, we can now add “letting the Richest Americans keep exorbitant Tax Cuts even at a time of great economic disaster” to the list. David’s written a column in today’s New York Times in which he’...

The NYT Piece on CO2 Measurement is a Good Read
There are several interesting articles in the NYT today. The piece on scientist Charles Keeling and how he developed the process of calculating and monitoring Carbon Dioxide levels in the atmosphere is unusually long and detailed for a newspaper piece. It's also simply an interesting, well-written story. It's become impossible to cover Climate Science in any way that does not have a political edge, but the numbers tell a story and one thing is certain, no one gets to negotiate a Bailout from the...
Mortgage applications fell last week
NEW YORK (AP) — The number of people applying for a Mortgage fell last week as higher rates discouraged borrowing. The Mortgage Bankers Association says its overall Mortgage application index decreased 18.6 percent from the previous week. The refinance index dropped 24.6 percent, marking the sixth decline in a row. The purchase index slipped 2.5 percent last week. Rates on fixed mortgages continued to edge up last week, remaining at the highest levels in six months. They are rising because...
Dem Rep. Schakowsky: US A "Banana Republic" Without Wealth Redistribution
"Who pays? Who is going to benefit, who is going to suffer?" Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) wonders. Well, first of all, I think it has to be acknowledged as a problem so that when people look at solutions they ask 'how are we distributing those benefits?' And that hasn't come up much in conversation. What we have to say is that 'our nation has to, for the sake of The Economy and for the sake of a real Democracy, not go further in the direction of a Banana Republic.' Where you have some rich familie...

The new law won't make a dent in how much the rich can leave their heirs, but don't think the battle is anywhere near over.
By Michael V. Copeland, Senior Writer
Like some Brigadoon concocted by Bush-era tax attorneys, 2010 appeared out of the calendrical mists bearing no federal Estate Tax. None. Zippo. Cue the big musical number, especially if you are the beneficiaries of the five or so Billionaires who bo...

Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization, and Job Creation Act of 2010 passes
crossposted with Ataxingmatter
No big surprise here. The House on December 16 passed the Senate-approved TRA by a vote of 277-148, clearing it for the President's signature. The bill extends the Bush Tax Cuts for two years and reduces the number of estates ...
Dean Baker takes a look at the stimulus that isn't there
In the Guardian, Dean Baker warns that the US business press is engaging in some irrational exuberance over the Obama/GOP tax deal, seeing it as a massive stimulus that will make for a strong recovery next year. There seems to be little doubt that Obama sees it that way, too. Or at least he seems to be confidently talking that way--though Baker doesn't talk about him specifically. What he does talk about is that the vast majority of the tax deal merely continues existing law, and such doesn't ...

The unkindest cut of all
Nothing in the tax Compromise worked out between the White House and Congressional Republicans is fraught with as much danger to the economic security of working Americans as the partial Payroll Tax holiday. Since its inception 75 years ago, Social Security has provided a dependable Retirement income for millions of workers who contributed to the program during their working years. For many of these seniors it has meant the difference between a dignified Old Age and the ignominy of Poverty. An...
Bush Was a Statist, Not a Conservative
A former White House Speechwriter, Mark Thiessen, has jumped to the defense of his former boss, writing for the Washington Post that George W. Bush “established a conservative record without parallel.” Even by the loose standards of Washington, that is a jaw-dropping assertion. I’ve been explaining for years that Bush was a big-government advocate, even writing a column back in 2007 for the Washington Examiner pointing out that Clinton had a much better economic record from a f...
Turkish man goes on trial for plot to kill rabbis
ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — A Turkish news agency says a court has released a man whom prosecutors accuse of plotting to Murder Jewish rabbis and the Istanbul-based leader of the world’s Orthodox Christians. The Anatolia agency says suspect Ismet Recber was freed pending the outcome of the trial following the first hearing Wednesday. Recber, a carpenter, faces up to 15 years in Prison if found Guilty of plotting to kill Patriarch Bartholomew I. He denies the accusations. Anatolia says the ...

Republicans Stop Opposing 9/11 Health Deal
The easiest bill to pass in the Lame Duck session is likely to be one of the last voted on in the Senate, a $4 billion-plus fund to aid in providing medical Care to First Responders who helped out in New York City during and after September 11.
Oddly, two of the biggest media drivers of its passage were Jon Stewart on Comedy Central's Daily Show and Fox News. Both organizations pushed Republicans, who had used Terrorist Acts to promote more defense Spending, but hadn't been willing to vote before a Tax C
Robert Reich: Why Obama Wins on Foreign Policy and Gays But Loses on Economics and Taxes
Two important victories for President Obama this week -- the New Start anti-ballistic missile treaty with Russia to reduce weapons and restart inspections, and the end of Don't Ask, Don't Tell after a 17-year ban on Gays in the Military.
Why have Senate Republicans been willing to break ranks on these two, while not a single Republican went along with Obama's plan to extend the Bush Tax Cuts only on the first $250,000 of income?
A hint of an answer can be found in another Senate defeat for Oba...

Reaactions to Obama and GOP Tax-Cut Deal
Who would have thought that our first black president could be brought down by Democrats? Unless there is a real attitude adjustment in the Democratic Party before 2012—a greater respect for the president’s ability to reach Compromises with very hostile adversaries—Obama’s own party will probably prevent him from getting a Second Term. If President Obama wanted to accomplish anything, he had to compromise. It seems that many Democrats would rather have a political civil...
Obamas lame duck wins likely to be a blip on the map in 2012 (Daily Caller)
Washington has rushed to declare President Obama a political Lazarus based on an active and successful Lame Duck session of Congress that saw Tax Rates extended for two years, the Repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” and will likely on Wednesday add the ratification of a nuclear arms reduction treaty with Russia.
But Obama’s accomplishments are likely to be mere foothills compared to the heights that the president and Congress will be forced to scale in the months a...
