Frank Lautenberg: Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) said on Tuesday that America's problem isn't that there are more madmen, it's that guns are too readily available to them.

Gun Owners of America Fights To Preserve The Next Jared Lee Loughner's Right To Purchase Firearms
If any consensus has emerged about the tragic shootings in Tucson last weekend, it is that Jared Lee Loughner, or anyone with a similar history of dangerous Mental Illness, should not have been able to purchase a gun. But that consensus would have to exclude the right-wing gun Lobbyist organization Gun Owners of America (GOA), which continues to fight any measure aimed at preventing the dangerously mentally ill from purchasing Firearms. Since the Gun Control Act of 1968, there have been legal m...

GOP Leaders: We oppose Rep. King's new gun control idea
The Republicans may just have to agree to disagree.
House Speaker John Boehner and House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) are against a new gun-control proposal put forth by a fellow GOPer in response to the Tucson shootings.
Rep. Peter King (R-L.I.), chairman of the Homeland Security Committee, said Tuesday that he'd introduce a new bill that bars anyone from carrying a gun within 1,000 feet of a federal official.
He believes the Legislation could have prevented the Jan. 8 Arizona shooting...

Bernie Sanders: Send me money or more people will die [Reader Post]
There’s always one. Following a tragedy it can be expected that the left will take advantage of it to further a political agenda and that is exactly what happened. In the wake of the event in Tucson member of both parties in Congress put a stop to their political activities out of respect for Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. Lawmakers had scheduled various Fundraisers and meet-and-greet events with Lobbyists and other Donors this week, but those were canceled as Democrats and Republicans ...
Lets Have A Rational Conversation About Guns
In the wake of the Tucson carnage, there has been considerable discussion here and elsewhere about Gun Possession and carry laws. Some have speculated that private Gun Possession would have reduced the death and injury toll in Tucson. Others have speculated that the toll would have increased with the presence of additional guns. What both sides have in common is that they are speculating.
As a backdrop for this discussion, let’s begin with a thumbnail look at the current state of gun law and ...
Officers stopped suspect on day of Ariz. shooting
(01-12) 10:55 PST Tucson, Ariz. (AP) --
In the hours before the Assassination attempt against Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, Jared Loughner went to Walmart, was pulled over for running a red light and ran from his father after an angry confrontation.
Investigators are piecing together the timeline of Loughner's frenzied morning before the attack that killed six.
"What he did and the morning before the shooting, we're just trying to find all that out," said sheriff's Capt. Chris Nanos.
Nanos wouldn't...
Giffords, Loughner, and Palin
Gabrielle Giffords’s office released a photo, from her Hospital room, of her husband, Captain Mark Kelly, holding her hand. (Doing so, as I wrote earlier this week, is often the crucial thing.) One of her doctors, Peter Rhee, told reporters that he’s now certain she will survive, in the short run, though “I can’t tell whether she’s going to be in a vegetative state.” It’s her left hand you see in the picture, the one that wore the Wedding Ring that Kelly...
Rush Limbaugh Blasts Critics Linking Talk Radio to Shootings...
Yahoo! Buzz Rush Limbaugh defended himself against suggestions that the heated Rhetoric sometimes found on political programs influenced the shootings in Arizona. Since the violent incident last weekend, a debate has erupted in the media about whether political Talk Shows influenced Jared Lee Loughner, the man accused of killing six people in Arizona and critically wounding Rep. Gabrielle Giffords. Talking about Loughner on his radio program, Limbaugh said, “We know he listened to heavy me...

Palin denounces critics over shootings
In a forceful and unapologetic statement released early Wednesday, Sarah Palin dismissed critics who had suggested that the former Alaska Governor's Firearms-infused Rhetoric contributed to the shootings in Tucson that killed six and wounded 14, including U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, contending they "incite the hatred and violence they purport to condemn."
"Like many, I've spent the past few days reflecting on what happened and praying for guidance," Palin said. "After this shocking tragedy, I...

The Political Consequences of Violence
I believe that The New Yorker’s George Packer has mistaken the meaning of a line in my column this week. He writes: Douthat wrote, in the spirit of phony equivalence, “If overheated Rhetoric and martial imagery really led inexorably to Murder, then both parties would belong in the dock,” but also this: “the Attempted Murder of a Democratic congresswoman is a potential gift to Liberalism.” In other words, everyone goes over the line now and then, no one actually want...
Jon Stewart, Reactionary
The clearest sign of the political cowardice and intellectual impotence of liberal America is its collective worship of Jon Stewart. Once upon a time, The Daily Show was probably funny - that’s presumably why it appears on Comedy Central. But Stewart long ago turned into the Oprah Winfrey for urban hipsters, his self-appointment as the arbiter-in-chief of smirking moderation masking a profoundly reactionary worldview.
Stewart is reaping accolades this week for his handling on Monday night of...
Friend claims that Jared Loughner didnt watch television or listen to talk radio
Shortly after Jared Loughner shot and killed six people while wounding dozens of others in Arizona the media went on a witch-hunt to see where they could lay the blame for Loughner’s actions. Personally, I would have blamed Jared Loughner and I suppose the media would have also if they weren’t being driven by their agenda. It didn’t take long for the media to find their target and set their sights on Sarah Palin, Glenn Beck, conservative t...
Precedent for the Consoler-in-Chief
Updated at 10:02 a.m. on January 12.
On Wednesday night, when President Obama addresses what is sure to be a packed crowd at the McKale Memorial Center at the University of Arizona, his words will reverberate not only in grieving Tucson but also across the country.
Whether the president can deliver a Speech worthy of the moment -- the first attempted Assassination of a female member of Congress, and the Murder of six bystanders -- remains to be seen.

Palin Accuses Critics of 'Blood Libel' (updated)
Far from backing down, Sarah Palin defended herself today against critics who linked her Rhetoric to the Arizona shootings, accusing them of the long-condemned anti-Semitic slur "blood Libel." TUCSON (Reuters) - Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, gravely injured in a shooting rampage, is "making more spontaneous movements" and is able to feel her bullet wounds with her hands, a doctor treating her said on Wednesday.
Giffords was shot through the head by a gunman who raked a meeting with semi-automatic pistol fire in Tucson on Saturday, killing six people including a federal judge, a nine-year-old girl and one of Giffords' aides.

Restricting freedom after Tucson shooting will galvanize gun owners
Proposals by lawmakers following the shooting of a Congresswoman in Tucson reveal a broad legislative intent to clamp down on personal liberties and ratchet up on state controls. Foremost in these efforts are self-styled “Progressives,” who, in true Orwellian style, have advocated stepping up the freedom regression on several fronts. As we noted in this column on Monday, Rep. Carolyn McCarthy and her ilk are planning to introduce new citizen disarmament edicts, and Rep. Robert ...

WASHINGTON—The House of Representatives paid tribute to one of its own Wednesday with a resolution honoring Democratic Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and the 19 others shot Saturday in Arizona.

Palin criticized for using 'blood libel'
(CNN) - The Anti-Defamation League, the organization that combats Anti-Semitism, says Sarah Palin should have used a different phrase than "blood Libel" to characterize attempts to link her discourse to the Arizona shootings, the latest in a series of criticisms leveled at the former Alaska Governor Monday over her use of the Controversial term.
