Doctors Saturday removed a breathing tube from Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and performed surgery to allow her to breathe on her own, though she remains in critical condition, Hospital officials in Tucson, Ariz., said in a statement.
The surgery, known as a tracheotomy, opened up a hole in her throat through which she could breathe, the statement from University Medical Center said.
