Judge in Loughner hearing probably knew judge who was killed

He was a star athlete in college at the University of San Francisco who suffered a severe injury that left him without the use of his legs, said Alan P. Bayham Jr., president of the Arizona Bar Association. He administers his courtroom from a Wheelchair. Anderson...

Slain Federal Judge Was Champion for Greater Court Resources
U.S. District Judge John M. Roll, who was killed in the Arizona shooting Saturday, was a bystander in the attack aimed at Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, according to news reports. It was not a coincidence, however, that he had come to the Grocery Store where Giffords was holding a meet-and-greet that morning; he came to talk with Giffords about greater resources for his court, The National Law Journal reports. "Such a discussion would have been typical for Roll," The NLJ explains. "He ...

Giffords shooting leads nation to introspection and political finger wagging
In the wake of the shooting in Arizona this weekend that critically injured Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and that killed and injured more than 20 people, many pundits and politicians are pointing fingers. Others are hoping the incident will serve to ratchet down rancor. Yet emerging details make it clear the shooter wasn’t primarily motivated by politics, right or left. Jared Lee Loughner seems mainly to have been struggling with Mental Illness and was angry at being thrown out of Pima Communi...
Giffords Predecessor: There Isn't Anything in Arizona That's Uniquely Different
ABC News’ Rick Klein reports: The shooting of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords over the weekend has prompted a reexamination of the nation’s Gun Laws, with a particular focus on Arizona, with its lax laws about Gun Ownership in addition to its tinderbox politics on Immigration and other hot-button issues.
But on ABC’s “Top Line” today, former Rep. Jim Kolbe - who represented Giffords’ district in Congress for 22 years before retiring in 2006 - said it’s a mist
Arizona's Eighth Congressional District Epitomized Over-The-Top Demonization Of Liberals
While it is critical to understand that Jared Loughner's Terrorist Attack on Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and dozens of her constituents over the weekend was not directly caused by the words of her political opponents, the tragedy in Arizona presents an opportunity to examine the nature of our political discourse. Giffords' district, the Arizona Eighth, is a prime example of overheated Rhetoric. Her 2010 campaign was plagued by Vandalism and death threats from anonymous citizens, as well as hyperbol...

Loughner Conviction Could Come Down To Why Judge Was At Giffords Event
Whether Jared Lee Loughner is convicted federally of killing Federal Judge John McCarthy Roll could come down simply to why he showed up to Saturday's event with Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ).
In the Criminal Complaint filed against Jared Lee Loughner, the FBI is building the case that U.S District Court Judge John Roll attended Rep. Gabrielle Giffords "Congress on your Corner" not by chance or on a social visit, but for official government business.
So why does Roll's reason for attending t...
