As parents, an event like this hits home especially hard. ...

Healing Words; Text Of President Barack Obama's Speech In Tucson Arizona
"On Saturday morning, Gabby, her staff, and many of her constituents gathered outside a Supermarket to exercise their right to peaceful assembly and free Speech. They were fulfilling a central tenet of the Democracy envisioned by our founders -- representatives of the people answering to their constituents, so as to carry their concerns to our nation's capital. Gabby called it "Congress on Your Corner" -- just an updated version of government of and by and for the people.
"That is the quintess...

Arizona shooting survivors may face emotional trauma
TUCSON Bill Badger, a retired Army colonel, had a flashback of dead and injured people on the ground a day after he was shot along with Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and 17 others Saturday.
Giffords aide Pam Simon, who was shot twice while lining up people to meet her boss, is afraid to close her eyes because she sees scenes of carnage.
Susan Hileman, wounded while Holding Hands with her now-dead 9-year-old neighbor, can't help blaming herself for bringing the child there.

Melody Moezzi: Enough With Insane Mental Health Cuts
At 14, I joined my High School Speech and debate team. Ever since, I've been hooked on public speaking. Put me in front of a bunch of strangers, the more the better, and I thrive. I don't need to imagine people in their underwear. All I need is my voice and occasionally, a microphone.
So, you can imagine how bizarre it was for me when I recently found myself feeling nervous in front of an audience of only a few dozen people. I'd been invited to speak at an alumni event, which would have been f...

Obamas Speech May Have Undercut Prosecution for Judges Murder
Josh Gerstein, Politico
It may have been inadvertent, but a passage in President Barack Obama’s Speech to a memorial service it Tucson Wednesday night could undercut a criminal charge Federal Prosecutors have leveled at suspect Jared Loughner for the death of U.S. District Court Judge John Roll in a shooting rampage Saturday.
“Judge Roll was recommended for the federal bench by John McCain 20 years ago, appointed by President George H.W. Bush, and rose to become Arizona’s chi...
President Obama's memorial speech rose above petty politics
On Tuesday night, President Obama addressed the country in a memorial service in Tucson, for the Shooting Victims that were gunned down Saturday morning in a Safeway Parking Lot. The attack killed six people and gravely wounded 14 others. Obama rose above petty politics and made the people, who have maligned and criticized him since taking office—seem small and inconsequential. “You see, when a tragedy like this strikes, it is part of our nature to demand explanations--to try to impo...
Jared Loughner alleged to use the drug salvia - Did it precipitate Gabrielle Giffords shooting?
A friend says the Arizona shooter used the hallucinogen salvia. Arizona shooter Jared Loughner used salvia, the Hallucinogenic drug, according to a High School friend of his. Obviously, Loughner was troubled. But did salvia have anything to do with it? There’s very little scientific information about the drug’s effects—thanks, in part, to salvia’s relative safety. “So far, the Federal Government has not funded any studies, because it’s not seen as relevant unt...
Tucson Memorial: Obamas Speech Based On The Premise That Attack Was Political
I’ve posted the full transcript of Obama’s memorial Speech below. Here are some of my reactions. First, the crowd was awful. The cheering, the cat calls and the shouting was downright charring and entirely inappropriate. At times it was clear that many in attendance, up to and including the President himself, was uncomfortable with it. Second, I thought Obama’s Speech was a mixture of good and bad. He did well in memorializing the Victims, but his Speech still seemed based on t...
