A Tale of Two Sheriffs
The Tucson massacre that left six dead and injured 14, including Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, brought into sharp public focus the local sheriff, Clarence Dupnik. He’s been the sheriff of Pima County, which includes Tucson, Arizona’s second-largest city, for 30 years. For the 20 years before that, he was a police officer. Dupnik has gained attention this week for linking the shooting to the vitriolic political climate in the U.S., and in particular, Arizona. Speaking at a Press Conference...

Tighter Gun-control Laws A Long Shot
(NewsCore) - The Tucson shootings have renewed an effort among Northeast lawmakers to strengthen federal gun-control laws, but a partisan climate and an influential gun lobby mean that talk may be as far as it gets, The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday. On Tuesday, Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-N.Y.), whose husband was killed by a lone gunman in a 1993 Shooting Spree, said she would introduce Legislation to reinstate a ban on high-capacity magazines like the one used by the Tucson shooter. Rep. P...

Gun law lobbyists call for action as Obama heads to Arizona
Barack Obama will fly to Tucson for a memorial service today for the fallen from last Saturday's shooting rampage just as Democrats start a push on Capitol Hill for a reintroduction of at least one element of an anti-gun package that was allowed to lapse in the first George W Bush Administration.
Efforts to comfort those traumatised by the attack, which left Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords critically wounded and killed six, including a Federal Judge, were set to begin here last night with a f...

She counseled Ted Kaczynski 13 years ago this month when the Unabomber was toying with the government in advance of his Guilty Plea. Arizona's extremism in the spotlight
In his Saturday news briefing, just hours after the shooting, Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik said:
The anger, the hatred, the Bigotry that goes on in this country is getting to be outrageous.... And unfortunately, Arizona I think has become sort of the capital. We have become the mecca for prejudice and bigotry.

After the Arizona Tragegy -- Healing the National Psyche
While Jared Loughner’s murderous violence was not caused—not even a little bit—by partisan politics in Arizona or in Washington, D.C., the fact that some politicians boldly and fraudulently stated that it was is evidence that our national psyche needs healing. Today, any news event, including a shooting by a psychiatrically disturbed man who takes some of his inspiration from an imaginary large, gray bird with scales, but no feathers, is fodder for Public Relations machines eng...
