Arizona shooting: The claim that more guns means less crime is just silly
I walked into a drugstore in Phoenix the night after the Tucson shooting and saw toy guns for sale. They were a garish red plastic, with bright orange tips, and bore the notice that it’s strictly illegal to paint the guns in any way to resemble real ones. Yet here, as Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik declared after the shooting, just about anyone can buy and carry a gun almost anywhere at any time. So why bother with toys? Sheriff Dupnik is the one politician (sheriffs are elected) who...
Angle: Media 'inappropriately attributing blame' for Tucson shooting
Former Nevada Senate Candidate Sharron Angle denied her campaign Rhetoric helped motivate the Tucson gunman and accused the media of "finger-pointing towards political figures" to boost Ratings.
Angle's suggestion during the midterm campaign that voters could pursue "Second Amendment remedies" to settle political differences with Congress has been widely criticized in the wake of the attack that left six people dead and Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) in critical condition.
"I have consiste...
Its not about guns, and Tucson is not why hateful speech is bad
The “Second Amendment remedy” discourse of the last few years is a near-monopoly of the Far Right, “crosshairs map” and all. And Arizona does have extremely permissive Firearms laws, and it’s full of people who really, really, want to be able to play with guns and take them everywhere. I would love to hang the Tucson massacre on both, the first because the hate/revolution/kill Speech is deeply execrable per se and the second because like everyone, ...
The Lone Gunman Theory of Legislation
Jared Lee Loughner, the man accused of shooting 20 people outside a Tucson grocery store on Saturday, probably will never get a chance to create the "new money system" he discusses in one of his rambling YouTube videos. But he can still have an important effect on Public Policy—if we let him.
After the shocking attack—which killed six people, including U.S. District Judge John Roll and 9-year-old Christina Green, and wounded 14, including Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.)—there was no shor

Tucson, Ariz. Jared Loughner had trouble with the law, was rejected by The Army after flunking a Drug Test and was considered so mentally unstable that he was banned from his college campus, where officials considered him a threat to other Students and faculty.
But the 22-year-old had no trouble buying the Glock semiautomatic pistol that authorities say he used in the Tucson rampage Saturday that left six dead and 14 injured, including U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.

Former Nevada Republican Senate Candidate Sharron Angle is blasting those blaming her for inciting the Arizona shooting that injured Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and killed six others, saying the accused shooter went off the deep end long before the Tea Party movement started.

PHOENIX — Arizona legislators quickly approved emergency Legislation Tuesday to head off picketing by a Topeka, Kan., church near the Funeral service for a 9-year-old girl who was killed in the Tucson shootings. Unanimous votes by the House and Senate sent the bill to Gov. Jan Brewer, who signed it Tuesday night. It took effect immediately. Without specifically mentioning the Tucson shooting, the law prohibits Protests at or near Funeral sites. Armed hero nearly shot wrong man in A...

There's a whole lot that we don't know about what led Jared Loughner to go on a shooting rampage last Saturday, and we probably will never know. So when we speculate about it, we're not only guessing and assuming facts not in evidence, we're tailoring the events that make no sense into something that does. That's the way the mind works. So when David Brooks says that there's no possible political motivation behind it, he's guessing just as much as those who are blaming Sarah Palin's unfortunate...
The deranged man had been steadily going downhill. His bizarre anti-social behavior and angry outbursts had caused him to be suspended from college classes. He spiraled downward into a vortex of madness and nursed a weird political grievance until finally he went on a murderous rampage with a 9-mm semi-automatic pistol, killing six people and wounding more than a dozen others.
But nobody blamed Sarah Palin or the Tea Party for this bloody Crime, because it was December 1993, and the deranged gun...

Hardly an hour had passed after the first sketchy news broke on Saturday that there had been a horrific shooting attack in Tucson, Ariz., at a public event held by Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, when the liberal media began reporting the incident in a way that suggested it was somehow linked to modern American politics -- as practiced by Conservatives.
At 1:53 p.m. Tucson time on Saturday, The Associated Press released a story reporting the identi...

This has become the mantra of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords’s staff in her district office, where those closest to her attempt to manage an overwhelming flood of constituents, cards, candles and flowers while their boss fights for her life in a Hospital bed 4 miles away.

Tim Pawlenty, Peter King, and Pat Sajak all feature in today’s Morning Jolt, but it begins with a look at an odd poll question:
Inconvenient Conclusions Get Surveys Left in the Poll Vault
CBS began Tuesday by telling us, “Overall, 57 percent of respondents said the harsh political tone had nothing to do with the shooting, compared to 32 percent who felt it did.” Ah, how reassuring! A triumph for common sense and known facts! There is hope for the Republic after all!
But CBS m...
As The Times’ Dalia Sussman noted yesterday, Americans have generally become more protective of Gun Ownership rights in recent years. There are some exception to the rule — for instance, according to the General Social Survey, which has been conducted intermittently since 1972, the percentage of Americans who think that permits should be required before a gun can be obtained has gradually risen (from 72 percent in 1972 to 79 percent in 2008). Background Checks for gun owners are over...
During my teens and early twenties, I fired weapons at people, who were often shooting back at me.
It was not a pleasant experience but, after V-E Day in Germany, when most of our food was being sold in British and French black markets, I was persuaded to go deer-hunting not so much for sport as out of Hunger. In early morning, sighting a brown hide and preparing to fire, I realized I was about to bag a cow.
That ended my hunting career, but I brought home as a souvenir a pistol I had taken fro...
Sarah Palin's gun sight-riddled campaign map is so Militant that it's even lost her the support of "The View" co-host Elizabeth Hasselbeck, who called Palin's behavior "despicable." After "View" co-host Joy Behar said the map, which features white and red gun sights drawn over districts whose Democratic representatives voted for Health Care, "looks like an al Qaeda Christmas Card" Thursday, Hasselbeck -- who campaigned with Palin in 2008 -- spoke up in uncharacteristic agreement. "This hasn't be...
