Sharia : Texas state Rep.

Leo Berman (R), a lawmaker best known for his anti-Obama Rhetoric and legislative proposal, has turned his eyes on a new risk -- the creeping threat of "religious or cultural law," and perhaps most importantly, Sharia.

Berman's Legislation would mandate that "A court of this state may not enforce, consider, or apply any religious or cultural law." Though it includes no direct mention of "Sharia," a subsequent interview would suggest that Berman, like other Republicans such as ...
Birther Texas Rep. Pushes 'Religious Or Cultural Law' (Read: Sharia) Ban
Texas state Rep. Leo Berman (R), last seen getting shellacked by Anderson Cooper over his birther bill, is pushing a state Constitutional Amendment that would prevent Texas courts from considering "religious or cultural law" when handing down rulings.
Though the amendment doesn't specifically say anything about Sharia law -- like a recently-blocked law in Oklahoma does, for example -- Berman said of the resolution: "A lot of federal courts are referring to international courts and laws of othe...
Turning up the rhetoric to 11
Following the tragedy in Tucson, the leftist media has been pushing the meme that “toxic Rhetoric” in politics needs to be toned down. I (dis)respectfully disagree. Conservatives will not be silenced by radicals who would love nothing more than for opposition to be muzzled to allow the Left to continue their march to socialism, unabated and uninterrupted.
During my morning pass through Twitter, I caught two key pieces on this topic from the American Spectator. In “Defen
Federal judges consider high school sports case
A Wisconsin case that could have nationwide implications for how reporters cover and how parents watch High School sports is making its way through the courts, with crucial constitutional arguments taking place Friday in Federal Court in Chicago. The case pits community Newspapers against the association that oversees High School sports in Wisconsin. Fans in many states rely on community Newspapers for news about High School teams, and the Newspapers say they need easy, unencumbered access to sp...
MCLU v. TiZA, cont'd

We've written a lot about the Tarek ibn Ziyad Academy K-8 public Charter School in suburban St. Paul. It appears to be is an Islamic School operating illegally at Taxpayer expense. Among other things, school Executive Director Asad Zaman is an imam and almost all of its Students are Muslim. It is housed in a building that was owned originally by the Muslim American Society of Minnesota. The study of Arabic is required at the school. The Arabic comes in handy for the K...
Bill would bar GPS tracking of political candidates
Private detectives have started using GPS tracking devices to follow political Candidates' movements, says Del. Kathy J. Byron, R-Campbell, and she is proposing Legislation to make the practice a Misdemeanor. Even though people may be running for public office, "we are still entitled to some Privacy," Byron, said in describing the bill, titled "Unauthorized use of electronic tracking device for opposition research." It has been common practice for several years for candidates to send aides known...

Texas Rep. Berman files resolution to ban ‘religious or cultural law’
Berman: 'If that includes Sharia law, then so be it'
Mimicking proposed Legislation in several other states, Rep. Leo Berman (R-Tyler) suggested a Constitutional Amendment prohibiting Texas courts from enforcing, considering or applying religious or cultural law. Though the joint resolution itself does not specify ‘Sharia Law’ - the practices governing Muslim life, including family, work
Judge John Roll, killed in Tucson rampage, remembered as man of integrity
Tucson - At the U.S. Courthouse here Friday afternoon, the doors to the fifth-floor courtroom of Arizona Chief U.S. District Judge John M. Roll were locked. No one answered a buzzer to his office suite. The computer screens that ordinarily list cases were blank, and the hallways, usually bustling, were empty.

Federal Judge Mourned As Fair Jurist, Family Man
The Federal Judge killed in the Arizona shooting rampage was known for an Immigration ruling that got him death threats, but on Friday he was remembered as a man devoted to his family, his basset hounds and his Irish-Catholic heritage.
U.S. District Judge John Roll had stopped by a Supermarket meet-and-greet for Rep. Gabrielle Giffords on Saturday when he was killed, along with five others. Giffords, recovering from a gunshot wound to the head, was still in critical condition, but progressing.

TUCSON (AP) One day after mourning a bubbly 9-year-old slain during the attempted Assassination of a congresswoman, residents and fellow jurists gathered Friday at the same Tucson church to remember a Federal Judge.

Two Oldies But Goodies
FHQ has spent a fair amount of time this week talking about the introduction of several state legislative bills that would shift the dates on which those states' presidential primaries would be held (California, Virginia and one to eliminate the presidential primary in Washington for 2012). In a look back over active Legislation with similar goals, we ran across a couple of bills in New Jersey that were introduced this time a year ago that should be included in our left sidebar "Presidential P...
A Michael Steele thought experiment
A Michael Steele THOUGHT EXPERIMENT.... In June, in an electoral fluke, a man named Alvin Greene somehow managed to win the Democratic primary in South Carolina's U.S. Senate race. When state and national Dems balked, leading far-right voices -- Rush Limbaugh, Laura Ingraham, and others -- insisted it was because the Democratic Party doesn't like African-American Candidates.
Five months later, House Democrats were choosing the leadership for the next Congress, and Steny Hoyer, who is white, le...
Meet your new RNC Chairman
It's all part of the right's plan to reload, rather than retreat, in eliminationist Rhetoric against anyone who doesn't goosestep to their tune. Reince Priebus, Chairman of the Wisconsin GOP, referred to the "execution" of Obama three separate times during a recent media Conference Call. "Feingold had mentioned that he thought that it would be good if we captured Obama in the battlefield setting and that he suffered the quote-unquote ultimate punishment there," Priebus told reporters while attem...
Ill. moment of silence law takes effect
SPRINGFIELD, Ill., Jan. 15 (UPI) -- Illinois education officials notified local School Districts Friday they can start beginning the school day with a "moment of silence." Because Monday is the federal Birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, the change will not take effect until Tuesday, the Chicago Tribune reported. U.S. District Judge Robert Gettleman, who issued a temporary injunction on the Illinois Silent Reflection and School Prayer Act two years ago, lifted it Thursday, the state Boar...
How Obama can foster the 'civil and honest' debate he called for
In his Speech in Tucson, where Federal Judge John Roll was recently murdered, President Obama said that "only a more civil and honest public discourse can help us face up to our challenges as a nation." But the President himself has often failed to live up to this aspiration, as his dishonest attacks on the judiciary, and his long line of broken campaign promises, illustrate. (Obama’s broken promises include false claims that he would implement a “net Spending Cut,” not raise t...
Judge: 1st Toyota lawsuits to go to trial in 2013
SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) — A Federal Judge says he expects the first Lawsuits against Toyota Motor Corp. stemming from sudden acceleration allegations will go to trial in 2013. U.S. District Judge James Selna gave the timeframe during a status hearing Friday in Santa Ana. Selna is overseeing the economic Class Action and the personal injury Lawsuits in the massive litigation that was consolidated in Federal Court in Orange County. The so-called bellwether Lawsuits are meant to test cases tha...
Webio founder sentenced to more than 16 years
David Hernandez's lifetime of lying finally has caught up to him, said a Federal Judge who sentenced the Downers Grove man Friday to more than 16 years in Prison for swindling more than 250 people out of $6.4 million.
Hernandez, best known for starting an Internet-based sports Talk Show with radio personality Mike North, apologized to his Fraud Victims in a rambling, tearful statement to U.S. District Judge Robert Gettleman. Hernandez pleaded for sympathy because he claims to suffer from menta...
Second Tucson victim buried
TUCSON, Jan. 14 (UPI) -- For the second consecutive day, mourners packed a Catholic Church for the Funeral of a Victim of the Tucson Mass Shooting. The service for U.S. District Judge John Roll was held under tight security, the Los Angeles Times reported. Everyone was screened before entering St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church. Patrick McGrath, a bailiff at the state Supreme Court, drove from Phoenix for the service. He sometimes played golf and had lunch with the judge but said he was turned away ...
Confronting Hate In Arizona
Faced with rising anger against ideological zealots who have turned the murderous atrocity in Arizona into a political circus, President Obama had to respond. In an excellent Speech eulogizing the six dead and paying respect to the critically injured Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, Obama appealed to the nation to cool down and stop the nonsense. His signature line was: "What we cannot do is use this tragedy as one more occasion to turn on each other."
Unfortunately, his words came too late.
The strugg...

What is happening to Governor Christie?
I just read that Governor Chris Christie plans to nominate Sohail Mohammed for a state Superior Court Judgeship. Mohammed is a Muslim attorney who represented many of the Detainees who were apprehended post 9/11. Mohammed has been (and may still be) a member of the Board of Trustees for the American Muslim Union (AMU), a group with a bit of a dubious history. Below is the article from Creeping Sharia…… Trenton — New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie says he will nominate a lawyer...
There is No Such Thing as the Mafia Sharia
Last night I came home after washing down some nice Italian salsiccia with a few glasses of pinot grigio. Since there's a "devil in every grape" (a Turkish proverb), that surely accounts for the impish Glee I took in imagining Shi'ite fiber as a tool of digestive Jihad--and in exposing to his otherwise doting public Robert Spencer's inexplicable taste in jazz. There have been times when I've ridden in his car, and he has popped in an artist like Rahsaan Roland Kirk (one of many goofball Islami...
