The Hawaii Reporter did some calculating, though, as we've explained before, it's almost impossible to assess the true cost of these kinds of trips.

UKs Daily Mail Outraged By Size Of Obama Motorcade
The Brits have a bit of Motorcade envy, it would seem. The UK’s Daily Mail has done some car-counting in Hawaii, and concluded that President Obama ’s 10-car Motorcade (about five times the length of the typical Jaguar-and-a-police-cruiser affairs the British prime minister gets) had “provoked fresh outrage…after taking a 20-man Motorcade to visit a childhood friend during his lavish Christmas holiday in Hawaii.”
The Daily Mail describes the outrageous way the moto...

The Huffington Post reports:
Honolulu — President Barack Obama bypassed the Senate Wednesday to make six Recess Appointments, including a deputy Attorney General whose links to the Insurance giant American International Group had stalled his confirmation.

Obamas R&R;: Marine Corps Base Hawaii

The Obamas Dance Company to Get Strict Government Oversight
There’s something curiously missing from this story on Chicago’s Mantu Dance Company. It may be the only time the company has made big news without a mention of Barack and Michelle Obama in years.
One can only imagine the headlines were it so closely linked to a Republican President.
Illinois officials are taking a closer look at a nonprofit dance company that was awarded a $4.5 million state grant in 2003 for a planned Performing Arts center on the South Side that has yet to begin...

Tea Party Republican Elected to Honolulu City Council
This 2010 election season brought a fairly substantial shift in political power from the left to the right in most places, Hawaii excluded (Hawaii continued a leftward trend). Very recently Hawaii had a vacancy for the City Council. I was pleased to see that for a very recent Special Election for the Honolulu City Council that Mr. Tom Berg was elected to the position. He passed through with 18.5% of the vote in his district. Mr. Berg is a Tea Party Candidate, which is quite the opposite of...

Thirty favorite quotes of 2010
I can't call these the best quotes of the year. But among them are deft turns of phrase, clearly stated truths, and a few revealing lifts of the veil. And most of them were handily accessible in my archives. If I had time to sift through all my 2010 posts I'd find many more which belong here. But I don't, and the list would be too long, anyway. Enjoy, and feel free to add your own favorites in the comments.

A happy, rational new year
Happy New Year to all. I won't bore you with my personal New Year's resolutions, but I do hope we might collectively agree (and please don't charge me with "collectivism") that not everything a politician does or says should be politicized and attacked. Sometimes, there really are matters we agree on across partisan and ideological lines. Take Michelle Obama's campaign against Obesity. For goodness sake: Many of us (notably yours truly) need to lose weight, eat better and exercise more. We shoul...

Obama Sticks To The Familiar On Hawaiian Vacation
Honolulu — More than a week into his Hawaiian holiday, President Barack Obama is proving to be a creature of habit.

His routine here in Oahu, the island where he was born and mostly raised, is by now patently familiar to the locals trying to catch a glimpse of their hometown president, and the reporters who come here to cover him.
Obama is almost certain to spend his mornings working out at Marine C...
