Schools lift ROTC ban after don't ask vote
Published: Dec. 21, 2010 at 8:13 AM Cambridge, Mass., Dec. 21 (UPI) -- Two Ivy League schools say they'll welcome back the ROTC program now that the U.S. Congress repealed a ban on gays and Lesbians openly serving in the Military. The decision to reinstate the Reserve Officers' Training Corps ends a 40-year standoff between Harvard University and the Armed Forces that began over the Vietnam War and remained as university administrators, faculty and Students objected to the military's "don't ask,...
Harvards disingenuous Solomon Amendment statement.
With the Repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell almost certain now to be passed into law*, there has been some discussion of one thing that Conservatives and Republicans will absolutely require to have happen: to wit, the ending of the Ivy League’s continuing campaign against the Military by forbidding ROTC programs on their campuses. Said campaign absolutely flaunts the intent of Congress (as per the ‘Solomon Amendment’), but has been generally tacitly tolerated by th...
Pyrrhic Victory: Whats Next For Gays After The DADT Repeal
My good friend Dan Blatt, of GayPatriot blog, has a worth reading column today at AOL, What's Next for Gays After the DADT Repeal?
Though we disagree on the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell (DADT), Blatt neutrally links to and quotes from my previous post, DADT Repeal: What Comes Next? Pentagon Asked, Tells Combat Troops Not To Tell, and I reviewed his draft for accuracy.
Respected defense and foreign po...
Opinion: What's Next for Gays After the DADT Repeal?
Despite all the hullabaloo over Senate passage of Legislation repealing the Clinton-era "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy barring gays from serving openly in the U.S. Armed Forces, gay men and Lesbians will still have to wait a bit before being able to serve openly, to say nothing of making progress on other legislative fronts. "After President Obama signs the legislation," reports AP National Security writer Robert Burns, "the Pentagon must still certify to Congress that the change won't damage co...
What Next for Gays After DADT Repeal?
In the wake of Senate passage of DADT, the folks at AOL asked me to write a piece on what’s next for gays. In my piece, I looked at the process of Repeal and the prospects for gay influence in the 112th Congress:
Despite all the hullabaloo over Senate passage of Legislation repealing the Clinton-era “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy barring gays from serving openly in the U.S. Armed Forces, gay men and Lesbians will still have to wait a bit before being able to ser...

Gov. McDonnell Says No Way To New DADT For Va. National Guard
A state lawmaker from Virginia is so upset about the Congress repealing Don't Ask, Don't Tell that he wants to institute a mini-DADT banning gay men and Lesbians from the Virginia National Guard.
"It's a distraction when I'm on the battlefield and have to concentrate on the enemy 600 yards away and I'm worried about this guy whose got eyes on me," the lawmaker, Delegate Bob Marshall (R), told WUSA9. "If I needed a Blood Transfusion and the guy next to me had committed Sodomy 14 times in the l...
Harvard, Yale open up to ROTC plans after 'don't ask, don't tell' vote
Source: CNN
The presidents of Harvard and Yale universities have expressed interest in ROTC programs after Congress voted to Repeal the Military's Controversial "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy that has banned Openly Gay and Lesbian service members.
The universities' statements come five months after Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan, then a Supreme Court nominee, came under criticism by Republican senators who complained that she actively tried to block military recruiters from Harvard Law School...
George H. W. Bush and "Voodoo Economics"
Sam Houston State University historian, writing on the Forbes web site, has a very odd blog post this morning. He criticizes MIT Economist Simon Johnson for attributing the term "voodoo economics" to George H.W. Bush. Domitrovic calls it a "myth" that the elder Bush ever uttered those words. "You'd think there'd be a scrap of evidence dating from 1980 in support of this claim. In fact there is none," he says. Perhaps down in Texas they don't have access to the Los Angeles Times. If one goes to t...

Harvard shamefully reopens campus to ROTC while throwing transgender students under the bus
This has me absolutely fuming. Once DADT has been repealed, Harvard University will reopen its campus to ROTC. I look forward to pursuing discussions with Military officials and others to achieve Harvard's full and formal recognition of ROTC. I am very pleased that more Students will now have the opportunity to serve their country. I am grateful to the Massachusetts delegation for their unified support for Repeal.

Sen. Manchin apologizes for missing votes on 'Don't ask' and immigration
Newly elected Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) apologized Tuesday for missing two key votes over the weekend while attending a Christmas Party.
Manchin previously explained that the gathering would be one of his only opportunities to see his family during the Holiday Season, but admitted that he made a mistake after catching flak from allies.
"Let me apologize to anybody and everybody within our listening and reading areas. I'm very sorry for missing the two votes,” Manchin said during a conferen...
ACLU threatens to sue over Marshall's bill banning gays from Va. National Guard
The ACLU of Virginia threatened Tuesday to file suit if Del. Bob Marshall (R-Prince William)'s proposed bill banning gays from openly serving in the Virginia National Guard becomes law next year. "Not only is Delegate Marshall's proposal an affront to gay men and Lesbians throughout the state but it will surely be ruled Unconstitutional before it is ever implemented," the group's Executive Director Kent Willis said. The U.S. Senate voted to end the 17-year-old federal ''Don't Ask, Don't Tell' p...
DADT repeal may pave way for ROTC return
Could ROTC return to Yale after a 41-year ban? Congress's decision to Repeal " "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," the Military's policy that bans gays and Lesbians from openly serving, makes it easier for the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps to return to campus, said James Campbell '13, who heads the Yale College Council ROTC Committee. The U.S. Senate voted 65-31 Saturday to Repeal "Don't Ask, Don't Tell." On Wednesday, the U.S. House of Representatives passed an identical version of the bill. Camp...
Human Rights Campaign to Rest After DADT Repeal?
“If you can fight and die for your country, there’s absolutely no reason why you can’t be granted the full set of rights” that others have, including the ability to marry a same-sex partner, said Fred Sainz, a vice president at the Human Rights Campaign, a Gay Rights group. With the Military’s policy repealed, he said, “Americans will deduce that on their own. We won’t have to say a thing.” Ah, yes, your work is done. Seriously, who even thinks tha...
DADT and ROTC - James Fallows - Politics - The Atlantic
Congratulations to all whose negotiation and persuasion over the years led to yesterday's vote repealing the Don't Ask Don't Tell rule for the Military.
Among the consequences: this removes the last stated objection to the return of ROTC programs to on-campus operations at Harvard and some other elite universities. I've discussed the background extensively, starting here and here. ROTC left these campuses four decades ago because of bitter disagreements over the Vietnam War. That's long in the ...
Harvard, Yale moving on ROTC
Some top universities moved quickly Saturday to respond to the vote repealing the ban on Gays in the Military, and those who don't restore their ROTC programs in the wake of the vote are likely to face immediate pressure on the issue.
The ROTC programs have been absent from a number of Ivy League and other leading campuses since the Vietnam War, and many schools subsequently linked programs' return to open service for gays and Lesbians.

DADT Repeal Is An Opportunity For Trans People
(An interesting take. Restrictions on open service by Transgender people aren't based in law but in policy, as will be the case again for gays, Lesbians and Bisexuals after the DADT "Repeal" Legislation is by the President. - promoted by Lurleen)
I've seen a shocking amount of resentment coming from different quarters of the trans community over the repeal of DADT that to me is completely unjustified and destructively short sighted. I’ve seen accusations of the trans community being ...
