But Wednesday, for the first time, host Committee Chairman Mark Miles says he believes the city would get another Super Bowl if an NFL labor stoppage canceled the game. Key To The City: My Super Bowl Dilemma
I hate football. Not really, but the Giants are giving me no choice. Two weeks ago, I asked for three things for Christmas. I asked for the Yankees to produce something that resembles a starting rotation that can compete in the AL East, the Giants to make the Playoffs and for the Knicks to land Carmelo Anthony. The Giants were eliminated from the Playoffs on Sunday, and the Yankees are thinking about bringing in Jeff Francis or Jeremy Bonderman to round out their rotation. Carmelo might as well ...

Video: The obligatory fan-created Doritos Super Bowl ad mocks Christian rite clip
Note well: This isn’t an ad that Doritos is running in the Super Bowl, just one that they posted on their website (and refused to remove) after a fan submitted it for their contest with Pepsi. The bad news? Even to an ex-Catholic like me, it feels cheap. Blasphemy in defense of principle, like free Speech, is welcome; blasphemy in the service of humor can be fun. Blasphemy to sell bags of Cool Ranch chips? Eh. They have every right, but aside from Richard Dawkins and maybe Hitch, whoR...

On Congress' First Day of Work, Republicans Set New Rules and Goals
On the 112th Congress' first day of work, an energized and emboldened Republican Party began spreading the gospel of fiscal discipline and smaller government -- and will now attempt to make good on both. Hours after Speaker John Boehner was sworn in, the GOP made short work of changing legislative procedures in the House, voting in support of the changes by a margin of 240-191. Among the most notable new provisions, lawmakers now have to go on record in voting to increase in the federal Debt --...
Two Down, the Pats To Go All the Way?
What else is there to say about Tablet Magazine’s New England Patriots? Playing arguably the toughest schedule, they went a League-best 14-2, securing homefield advantage until February. They extended their home Regular Season win streak to a record 27. They committed ten turnovers during the entire season, a record. Quarterback Tom Brady had, maybe, a career year: 36 touchdowns versus four interceptions, a genuinely absurd ratio of 9.0 that absolutely smashed the previous record of 6.25 (...
Today: Jets Playoff Rally in Rockefeller Plaza
Come on New York, let's send Gang Green off in style.
The Playoff-bound Jets are holding a rally this afternoon ahead of their highly anticipated Wild Card showdown Saturday in Indianapolis against Peyton Manning and the Colts.
As coach Rex Ryan has said, Gang Green wants revenge on the team that knocked them out of Super Bowl contention last season. So let's help pump them up. Fireman Ed will be on hand to help do just that, as will the Jets Flight crew.
Event organizers say two "Jets alum...
Jason Garrett Is Dallas Cowboys New Head Coach
IRVING, Texas — Jason Garrett nailed his audition. He gets to remain coach of the Dallas Cowboys.
A person familiar with the decision told The Associated Press that Garrett will be announced as the new head coach at a news conference at Cowboys Stadium on Thursday afternoon. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team had not announced the decision.
Team owner Jerry Jones peeled the interim label off Garrett and made him – officially – the eighth head coach in...
Darrell Issa, House Oversight Chief, Could Do Well By Doing Good
Rep. Darrell Issa, the incoming leader of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, has generated much attention and speculation lately about his effort to hunt down "job killing" federal regulations. While Democrats are hoping to cast the California Republican as a hyperpartisan Committee Chairman set on politically motivated "witch hunts," Issa could surprise them. He is well positioned to do more than generate publicity; he could reveal real examples of waste and malfeasance. ...
Cameras in House Rules Committee Make McGovern Squeemish
House Rules Committee Chairman David Dreier (R-CA) had a wish: if Republicans reclaimed control of the House, he'd install cameras in the Rules Committee hearing room. And the cameras were present Wednesday evening as the Rules panel met for its first organizational session to launch the 112th Congress. Numerous other House Committees have featured cameras for years. To make matters worse, when C-SPAN, FOX or any other TV outlet cared to televise Rules Committee proceedings, aides would have to ...
Rules changes and the crying game
There is perhaps no time during any given session of the House of Representatives at which the members are more open to charges of hypocrisy than when a new majority undertakes the adoption of its new rules package. That's because it's the time of the transition from the role of rules Victim/complainer to the role of rules maker. It's a time when all the evils supposedly visited upon you by the outgoing dictatorial majority suddenly prove rather attractive as instruments of your newfound power....

Get alerts when there is a new article that might interest you. Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan said this afternoon at the National Press Club that his committee and others will hold “lots of hearings” on Medicare and Medicaid reform during the next two years, even though he's not sure there's consensus in the Republican party to bring up Legislation for a vote. Said Ryan: "We’re gonna bring governors up to tell us about their reforms that they’ve done. We’re go...
Upton weighs plan of attack against EPA climate rules
Incoming House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton (R-Mich.) is weighing how to attack EPA Climate Change rules as the committee prepares for meetings this month.
Upton told reporters Wednesday that he plans to fill out GOP subcommittee rosters as soon as today, but that the committee won’t get rolling in earnest until Jan. 19.
“I think the 19th is likely the earliest we can organize,” he told reporters just after the new Congress formally began Wednesday under House GOP ru

GOP restarts anti-health law agenda
Republicans reopened their battle against President Barack Obama’s Health Care law, using the first committee meeting of the new Congress Thursday to eviscerate the overhaul as a “job killer” and a “malignant tumor.”
“We must pull it out by The Roots,” said Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) in his opening Testimony at a Rules Committee.

GOP bends its own new House rules (Politico)
Just hours after taking control of the House, Republicans passed a sweeping set of rules promising transparency and reform.
But the new majority is already showing these promises aren’t exactly set in stone.
After calling for bills to go through a regular committee process, the bill that would Repeal the Health Care law will not go through a single committee. Despite promising a more open amendment process for bills, amendments for the Health Care Repeal will be all but shut down. Afte...

Giants Coughlin To Critics: Kiss My A!
NEW YORK (WFAN/AP) - Tom Coughlin isn’t often compared to the Jets’ boisterous head coach, Rex Ryan. Coughlin’s comments came during a post-game Speech at FedEx Field on Sunday, after the Giants wrapped up their season with a 17-14 win over the Washington Redskins. “We did our part, okay? That’s all I can ask you to do. From the bottom of my heart and everybody’s, we have a 10-and-6 season, a 10-win season in the NFL, okay?” Coughlin said. “T...
